Wind Power........Harvesting
The Wind
Wind power has long been a source of renewable energy. It is
all around us as evident by trees swaying back and forth or
waves on the ocean. It is the fastest growing alternative energy
source. It is also the easiest one to install for the homeowner.
Some locations have abundant wind and generating electricity
is a no-brainer. It is there for the taking. You just need a
plan of action......a little push or nudge.....something to
give you direction. That is the goal of this page, giving the
tools to the right person at the right time. On this site we
will discuss residential wind applications in most instances.
Wind Energy Basics
Air in motion is wind. Wind energy is a result of the uneven
heating of the earth from solar energy. As the air gets heated,
it gets lighter and rises. As the air rises, cooler air rushes
in to replace the heated air, thus causing wind. Solid land
masses heat faster than water masses which causes a constant
wind near beaches and shorelines. The force of the wind is used
to spin propellers which in turn spin generators which in turn
makes electricity. In engineering terms, the kinetic energy
of wind is converted to mechanical energy which is converted
to (typically) electrical energy.
Wind energy is harvested by wind turbines. Wind turbines are
technically any kind of turbine that uses wind energy to produce
electricity. You have probably seen them in your city near buildings
or in some residential backyards. The big airplane looking propeller
spinning in circles. Wind energy is the easiest of any renewable
source for the homeowner to begin saving on the utility bill.
They even look cool, somewhat high-tech.
If you are considering renewable energy sources,
the first question you need an answer to is how much energy
can be harvested at your site. It isn't a matter of just buying
a turbine or some panels and mounting them. The first step is
to determine if your particular location is
suitable. You can certainly search for the average conditions
for your city, but for exact information you will need a site
assessment done by a professional..... Or do you??
